Next Generation Zone Alum Shares Success Story

Ben had been sporadically attending the
Next Generation Zone GED classroom  in the winter of 2014. That May, he went to see Career Specialist Lisa Bridges after completing his GED and told her that it was time for a change. After three felonies and three gross misdemeanors, he was thinking maybe it was too late. Ben had a baby on the way and wanted to be able to support his family. His goal was to have a career as a welder.

Lisa helped Ben identify a career pathway he was excited about, create a résumé, and then referred him to Allwest Welding School in Spokane Valley. He struggled with putting those soft skills he had learned at the Next Generation Zone into practice at training. Chris Walker, Allwest welding instructor, took Ben under his wing as a mentee, and Ben made huge progress.  He started showing up on-time and ready to learn, and in short order completed training and passed his exams needed to become a certified welder.
Ben has worked for the last year as a welder full-time at a wage that allows him to provide for his family. When he visits the Next Generation Zone, he is brimming with self-respect and pride; he believes he is capable now. The ripple effects of his success reach far and wide - he didn't just change his life, he changed the lives of his children as well.

Meet Ben and more Next Generation Zone Alumni at our Open House on September 30th.
