2015 Accomplishments and 2016 Goals

Climbing toward 2016
The Spokane Area Workforce Development Council is dedicated to creating a demand-driven workforce system in Spokane County. We make strategic public and private investments to ensure a skilled local workforce that meets the needs of our employers and creates a vibrant economy for the entire region. 
 
Upon welcoming 2016, we immediately began working on this year's strategies and activities. These include new and innovative ways of collaborating with local businesses, educational institutions, and community partners to develop a talent pipeline that provides businesses with the skilled workforce they need to grow and prosper. We are excited to work with you to ensure that in 2016 we continue to increase the skills of our workforce and support regional economic development. 
 
Review our 2015 accomplishments and 2016 goals to see examples of the ways in which we:
  • Respond to industry needs for a skilled workforce;
  • Develop a local talent and training pipeline; and
  • Ensure innovation, quality, and stewardship of funds.
2015 Accomplishments
  • Visits to the Next Generation Zone - our career and education centerfor young adults - are up 40%, totaling 3,500 visits in 2015.
  • Visits to WorkSource Spokane - our regional employment center - increased to more than 68,000 visits last year.
  • In partnership with local business and education partners, the SAWDC's Youth Employment and Career Readiness Network accomplished the following:
    • Launched the Passport to Career Success, a multi-media tool for young adult career exploration;
    • Launched a brand-new website for the Next Generation Zone;
    • Expanded the Next Generation Zone's 21st Century Skills Academy, an internship and work-based learning program; and
    • Thanks to many supporters, completed a re-design and technology overhaul of the Next Generation Zone and hosted an open house to share the new space with the community. 
  • The second annual KHQ/WorkSource Job Fair was a huge success, with approximately 2,500 job seekers and 110 local businesses in attendance.
  • In partnership with JPMorgan Chase and local business and education partners, the SAWDC published a Healthcare Workforce Roadmap that is helping define career pathways in this vital sector and informing the work of local education and training providers. 
  • Implemented the new federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that is designed to assure that U.S. companies remain competitive and grow jobs, that our domestic workforce has the guidance and pathways needed to obtain required skills, and that our communities have the workforce development system in place to remain strong.
  • The Chase Youth Commission named the Next Generation Zone as the winner of the 2015 Champion of Youth award in the Non-Profit category.
 
2016 Goals
  • The SAWDC's Youth Employment and Career Readiness Network is generating tangible strategies to expand ways we partner with local businesses.
  • The SAWDC and WorkSource Spokane will be partnering with Washington State agencies to implement a customer service design known as Integrated Service Delivery that will streamline the experience for job seekers visiting our one-stop center.
  • In partnership with community stakeholders, develop a new Strategic Plan for Workforce Development for our area. 
     
  • Explore additional partnership ideas with the Community Colleges of Spokane, including additional Industry Navigators to assist with career exploration and employment placements of students. 
  • Complete Workforce Roadmap reports for the region's four remaining targeted sectors: Finance and Insurance; Manufacturing and Aerospace; Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services; and Transportation and Warehousing.
  • Begin offering succession planning workshops and internship creation assistance for local businesses.
  • Hold the first annual Next Gen Job Fair on March 3, aimed at early career exploration for young adults.
